Without a doubt, this is the best Thai food in metro-Detroit. I tried this place for the first time in April 2025. I've been back at least once per week since. The chefs in the kitchen know what they're doing. I've never had a bad meal. The quality and flavor is outstanding. The ingredients are fresh and full of flavor. The hospitality is off-the-charts too. I'm always welcomed with a warm smile. They even remember all of my previous orders, spice level, omissions, and all - Despite multiple orders over several months. You want extra spice on the side, extra sauce, no onions, chop sticks? Just ask. This is truly a company with an ethos that appreciates exceptional food, knows how to deliver, and wants the customer to enjoy their experience. I cannot say enough positive things about this place and the wonderful people who work here. Thank you, Thai 101. This is consistently the best Thai restaurant experience I've had in years, hands-down. I can't wait to come visit again very soon.
Overview
Walking into Thai 101 for the first time felt like stepping into a neighborhood spot that already knew what it was doing. Located at 32725 Woodward Ave, Royal Oak, MI 48073, United States, this diner-style Thai restaurant has the kind of relaxed energy that makes you want to stay a little longer than planned. I stopped in on a busy weekday evening, and within minutes it was clear why locals keep coming back. The place hums with conversation, the kitchen moves fast, and the aroma of fresh herbs hits before you even sit down.
The menu is where things really start to shine. Instead of overwhelming you, itβs thoughtfully laid out with familiar Thai staples and a few house favorites that show confidence rather than flash. I ordered pad thai on my first visit because itβs a reliable benchmark, and it arrived with perfectly cooked rice noodles, a balanced tamarind sauce, and just enough crunch from bean sprouts. On another visit, the Thai basil chicken stood out for its clean heat and fragrant basil, a dish that shows restraint and technique rather than relying on sugar or oil. According to culinary research from the Institute of Culinary Education, balance between sweet, salty, sour, and spicy is central to Thai cuisine, and that balance is consistently respected here.
What impressed me most over multiple visits was how consistent the food stayed. Consistency is something restaurant consultants often point to as a key factor in long-term success, and organizations like the National Restaurant Association regularly highlight it as a driver of repeat customers. At this spot, whether dining in or grabbing takeout, portions are steady, flavors stay true, and the presentation never feels rushed. That kind of reliability builds trust quickly, especially in a competitive food scene like Royal Oak.
The cooking process itself feels grounded in real technique. You can taste that sauces arenβt coming from a bottle but are layered during cooking. Stir-frying happens fast, vegetables stay crisp, and proteins arenβt overworked. These are small details, yet they matter. Food science studies published by Harvardβs T.H. Chan School of Public Health note that high-heat cooking done correctly preserves texture and flavor while limiting unnecessary oil absorption, something that clearly benefits the dishes served here.
Service adds another layer to the experience. Staff members are approachable and genuinely helpful when it comes to navigating spice levels or suggesting menu combinations. I once asked for a medium spice, and the server explained how their scale works rather than guessing, which saved me from ordering something too mild or overwhelmingly hot. That kind of transparency goes a long way in building credibility with diners who may be new to Thai food.
Reviews from regular customers often mention the welcoming atmosphere and dependable food, and that lines up closely with my own experience. While no restaurant is perfect, seating can feel a bit tight during peak hours, and parking along Woodward Avenue sometimes takes patience. Still, those are minor trade-offs for food that delivers consistently and a location thatβs easy to reach.
For anyone exploring Thai cuisine in Metro Detroit, this restaurant offers a clear, honest take on classic dishes without unnecessary gimmicks. Itβs a place that understands its audience, respects the cuisine, and delivers meals that feel carefully made rather than mass-produced. Whether youβre scanning menus online or deciding where to eat after work, itβs easy to see why this spot has earned its place in local dining conversations.

Was driving by and saw this place, had to stop by and I am glad I did. Wonderful staff and the owner is so kind!!! The food is so authentic, flavorful and fresh. If youβre in the mood for Thai food, give this place a try, you wonβt be disappointed!!
Right on Woodward, this small storefront restaurant has seating for 6 at the counter overlooking the parking area and M-1. There is a 4-seat low-top table if it isn't being used for carry-out or catering pickups. If you're dining choices require a great view, pack a lunch and head to the lake. The woman working up front was scary fast, assembling a big carryout order, answering the phone, getting incoming to-go order tickets to the kitchen all while taking my order faster than most restaurants would've handled half that work. She apologized a lot but never had cause to do so. My order of Peanut Curry w/chicken arrived in about 4 minutes. A huge portion for lunch and so delicious! The veggies had a slight crunch still () and the sweet sauce did not overpower their flavors.
Having been to the majority of the Thai restaurants around Oakland and Wayne county, I can confidently say this is one of, if not THE, best Thai restaurants Iβve ever eaten at. Freshness you can taste in the ingredients (no canned stuff), amazing staff that will accommodate your taste buds, and an incredible menu will nothing but 10/10 dishes. Make it here and get a taste of Thailand! ????????
Top notch service and quality!! The food is not only authentic but absolutely delicious! Itβs obvious that they use only the best ingredients. Every dish Iβve had has been outstanding. Their hospitality is unmatched. Everything from communicating regarding spice levels, refilling my water regularly to asking me if my tea was too sweet and making it more to my liking. Plus the staff is really friendly and knowledgeable about Thai culture, and the whole Thai experience, so they are fun to talk to and connect on that level. I give them my highest recommendation!!
Even though it's mostly a carry out location, we dined in to get the freshest bite. I was able to have an intimate conversation and eat with a view. The food was beyond delicious. Everything we tried was vegan, hearty, flavorful, and healing. They make it a point to note that they don't use fish sauce in any of their meals so it's very easy to veganize or order vegetarian. The pricing for the spice and the flavor is unbeatable, especially since it's so rare to find vegan Thai soups! The waitress was so sweet and helpful, she felt like family. I will definitely come again and again!
This is the only Thai spot you need, unless you're actually in the country of Thailand haha. Forget all the other local Thai restaurants, THIS is the Thai spot that you want to get your food at. I've tried all of the Thai places around here and there's no doubt, this place wins. I wish I lived a little bit closer, if I did I'd probably eat here for my only source of food. VERY friendly Thai staff (and cool) who will make sure you love your food, I left with so many unexpected extra little things that I was given, the people here are awesome. Anyways seriously, don't skip this spot!
